Gold finally broke below long-term trendline support around $1527 earlier today (connect January, March, May & June 2011 lows), which is something I’ve been waiting for patiently over the past few weeks.

Greek opposition show support for austerity

A sloppy end to the week for risk
So Trichet may have signalled a rate hike next month, but investors weren’t persuaded this was the start of an aggressive tightening cycle so the euro has continued to sell off this morning.

Markets wait for Trichet
The market will be all ears for the phrase “strong vigilance” during the ECB President’s press conference later this afternoon. The market expects the ECB to remain on hold, but for Trichet to signal a rate hike next month.
